AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING IN THE NOVEL THE PROPOSAL OF LOVE BY MAYYA ADNAN

Abstract


Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the types of code switching used by the characters in the dialogues and the reasons that make the characters in the novel The Proposal of Love switch their language from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The data were analyzed in two processes : descriptive analysis and documenting analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that are three types of code switching used by characters in the novel: Tag switching, Inter-sentential, and Intra-sentential. The frequencies of tag switching found 7 times or 11.11%, inter-sentential found 31 times or 49.20% and intra-sentential found 25 times or 39.68%. Besides, the reasons that make the characters in the novel switch their languange were expressing group identity is 28 times or 45.16%, talking about particular topic is 18 times or 29.03%, emphatic is 9 times or 14.51%, and repetition used for clarification is 7 times or 11.29%. On the other hand, previously the researchers divided 63 code switching data in the form of phrases and sentences into word forms.
